As you prepare for your theory test, you will notice that the traffic signs come in different shapes and colors.
Why do they have different shapes?
Traffic signs come in different shapes and colours to help drivers quickly identify what the sign is for.
Triangular signs

Triangular signs are for warnings. These tent to tell the road user of something ahead that they need to be aware of. Things such as low bridges, zebra crossings, hidden dips in the road etc.
Signs with red circle border

These signs give orders. They tell road user what they must not do. You will find signs for maximum speed limits, no overtaking, no cars allowed and more.
Circular signs with blue background

These are mandatory signs telling the road user what they can do. You will find signs such as pedestrians only, trams only, minimum speed etc.
Rectangular signs

These signs give information. They tell don't tell the road user what they should or shouldn't do. They just give information that will help them make decisions. You will find signs such as directions, contraflow signs, lane layout etc.
Exceptions

There are two main exceptions to these rules:
Giveway signs
Giveway signs are orders but they are in an upside down triangle.
2. Stop signs
This is another sign that is an order but it doesn't have a red circular border. A stop sign is hexagon shaped and is the only sign shaped like this. Even if it's partly covered in snow, road users will still be able to see what it is.
