What will happen on my theory test?

Updated: 4 days ago

So you've managed to book a theory test, you've read your highway code, you've used Theory Test Hero and now you are ready for the test. But what actually happens on the day of your test?

Getting to the test centre

This may seem obvious, but you will be surprised how many people waste their money and time by turning up late for their theory test. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • They didn't realise how long it was going to take to get there

  • They didn't know exactly where the test centre was

  • General bad time keeping

To avoid some of these reasons, make sure you know where your test centre is. Check your confirmation email and then use maps to see how long it will take you to get there. Plan your journey, factoring in any delays on public transport etc.

There have been changes to some test centre locations. Check out this article for a full list of all the changes including new locations.

What should I bring?

Before making your way to the theory test centre, make sure that you have your provisional licence with you. You will not be able to take the theory test without your provisional licence. People sometimes forget it, or misplace a few days before the test.

If you don't always keep your licence on you, make sure you look for it a few days before the test and keep it in a safe place. This will save you from panicking on the day when you cant find it. You want to be as relaxed as possible and the last thing you need is to stress out whilst turning your house upside down looking for your provisional licence.

If you haven’t got a provisional licence yet, you can apply for one using the link below.

You might also want to bring some water with you if you as some people find it helpful with test nerves.

What do I do when I get there?

Once you get to the test centre, you need to find the reception and let them know that you are there. They will then tell you where to wait and what you need to show them before starting the test.

Taking the test

The theory test is taken in a room with a few computers inside it. There are usually lockers where you have to put your phone and anything else you want to leave in there. You are not allowed to bring your phone into the room with you.

A few people will take the test at the same time as you. You will be shown where to sit by the staff.

The test itself is divided into two parts:

  • Multiple choice section

  • Hazard perception

You will start with the multiple choice question which consists of 50 questions. You will have to get at least 43 out of 50 to pass.

You will also have to pass the hazard perception part of the test, which consists of 5 short video clips with hazards in them. You will have to click when you see a hazard and you are scored based on when you click. You need to score at least 44 out of 75 to pass the hazard perception.

You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test!

How long do I have to do the theory test?

You will have 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete the theory test. Of that, you have 57 minutes to complete the multiple choice section and the rest for the hazard perception.

You can finish earlier if you answer all the questions. It is recommended that if you have time, go back check your answers. This may be the difference between passing and failing.

When will I get my theory test result?

Once you have finished, go to the reception where you first checked in. There you will be given a sheet with your result on it. It will look something like this:

Hopefully you will have passed your test. Now you will be thinking more about the practical test.
