A question we get asked a lot is, should I book my theory test or driving lessons first? Does it matter which way I do it?
Whenever I was asked this question I would always give the same answer. Driving lessons will always enhance your knowledge of theory. But since the lockdowns, the answer is not always straight forward. Now you have to think about a lot of things such as:
If I do my my theory test now, and there's another lockdown,
won't it expire before I can do my test?
Since there isn't much availability of theory test spaces, is it better I just book now and get it out of the way.
Will there be a driving instructor ready to take you on if you pass your theory test? ( If you haven't got one already )
These are things you are going to have to think about when making your decision. In my personal opinion, no one really knows what will happen if there is another lockdown. So waiting around and not doing your theory test because of it doesn’t really make much sense, especially if you are trying to get your driving licence quickly.
So, there's still the question of which you should do first, your theory test, or your driving lessons?
If you feel that you have practiced enough and are ready to do your theory test before you've done any lessons, then go for it. Especially if you already have a driving instructor who's ready to take you on. Since some people are finding it difficult to find an instructor who is ready to take them on. ( Check out the finding a driving instructor blog )
If you haven't started any revision or you feel like you aren't ready to do your theory, it is perfectly acceptable to start your driving lessons. Doing lessons makes it easier for your to understand the theory. Also, if your instructor is any good, they will through some theory every now and again during your lessons to help you out. Just make sure that you don't get so focused on the driving lessons that you completely forget about the theory.
You don't want to get to a position where you are ready to do your practical test but you can't book it because you haven't done your theory test yet. Always have your theory in mind when doing your lessons. That way, you can will learn quicker and also have a better understanding of the road and their rules.
Start practicing your theory as soon as you can if you want to get your licence soon.
