Theory test booking

Updated: Nov 29, 2021

Do you need to do driving lessons before you can book the theory test?

This is a question that is asked a lot by learners. The simple answer is no. You do not need to have had driving lessons before you can book your theory.

What do I need to book a theory test?

  • Provisional licence

  • Internet connection or a phone

  • £23

It does make taking the test easier. We cover this more here.

When should I book my theory test?

This will depend on a few things and you need to ask yourself a few questions:

Am I ready to take the theory test?

Do I have an instructor to take me for driving lessons when I pass the theory test?

Are there any tests available to book?

The last point is mainly because of the lockdowns that have happened recently. These have made it more difficult to find available theory tests and practical tests.

You want to make sure that you are ready to take the test before you go for it. This doesn’t mean that you can't book a test and then prepare for it. Just don't go there unprepared or try to wing it. You will waste your time and money.

Then you have to also think about whether you have a driving instructor ready to take you on after you pass your theory. You don't want to pass it and then just sit on it while it's slowly expiring. Remember you only have two years from the day you pass until it expires. If you haven't passed your practical test by that time, you will have to do your theory test again.

Once you are ready to book your theory test, make sure you go straight to the .gov website to book it. There are a lot of sites that will charge you extra to book when you can easily do it yourself.
