Are learners allowed on the motorway?

Can learners drive on the motorway?

It used to be that learners weren't allowed on the motorway until they passed their driving test. This was an issue as often, most drivers wouldn't take further training for the motorway and so were left unprepared.

When will learners be allowed to drive on the motorway?

On June 4th 2018, the law changed to allow learners to practice on the motorway.

Who can take learners on to the motorway?

The learner must be accompanied by a fully qualified driving instructor

The practice vehicle must be fitted with dual controls

Are motorway lessons compulsory?

The motorway lessons will be optional and it will be up to the instructor and the learner to decide if they are ready to go on the motorway.

Will I go on the motorway on my test?

It will not be part of the driving test. This is because in some areas of the country some driving test centres do not have access to a motorway.

What are the benefits of learners being allowed on the motorway?

Get experience before passing your test

Prepare learners for life after their test

Safer learning experience with the instructor

What if I miss a turn?

Just like in any part of the driving test, if you miss the turn you were supposed to take, the best thing to do is to carry on if safe to do so. The sat nav should redirect you or the examiner may intervene and tell you which way to go.

The sat nav section of the test is nothing to worry about. Here are some of the reasons which might make using sat nav easier:

The sat nav gives you early, clear and loud instruction

Gives you plenty of time to prepare for your turn

Tells you how far the turn is

You can see where you are supposed to be going

It displays the speed limit of the road you are driving on

Tips for using the sat nav

Practice using one before you go on your test

Get a good understanding of how to measure distance in yards ( The sat nav will tell you how far your turn is in yards )

If you are really unsure about where you are going, ask the examiner

Don’t make any dangerous last minute turns

Don’t stare at the sat nav screen ( your eyes should be focused mainly on the road Ahead

Take glances so you can see where the route is taking you ahead of time

When looking at the speed limit displayed on the sat nav, make sure there are no temporary speed restrictions in place as these will override the ones on the sat nav

In the Theory test there are lots of questions about the motorway.
