Box junctions can be confusing not only for learners but for licensed drivers too. That is because there is so much misinformation out there about it with people saying things like, 'Never stop in a box junction or you will get a ticket.'
That is just incorrect. There are times when you are supposed to wait in the box and not doing so could cause issues for yourself and other drivers. In a driving test, you could fail if you don't know how to do it properly.
The basic rules for using box junctions are:
Do not enter it if you're going straight or left and your exit isn't clear.
Only stop in a box junction if you are turning right and your exit is clear, but the you can't turn because you're prevented by oncoming vehicles.
Turning right can be challenging, but sometimes turning left can be difficult if you don't know how it's done. Take a look here for tips on turning left and right.
Reference points make it easier when you first start driving. In the video above, there are lots of reference points to help you turn left and right.
Once you do this a few times, you won't need to use them anymore. Practice this loads and make sure you know how to do it properly before going for your test.
